What is particularly good about this system is that 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼-𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴, and the nurses can use the tags to 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 wherever they are. Nurses especially like the possibility of asking for help in the system. With the help of the system, one night nurse can easily keep track of what is happening in the care home during the night. Yesterday’s Olof Rudbecksdagen program on AI in healthcare at Akademiska Hospital in collaboration with Uppsala University was engaging, with both preclinical and clinical research presented by researchers who were effective communicators, making AI concepts easy to understand. Some takeaways were: 1. AI is being applied in numerous research projects at Uppsala University, ranging from neurosurgery to cardiology, not only for diagnosis but also for disease prediction and rehabilitation. 2. Significant work is being done to move away from a "one-size-fits-all" treatments to more precise treatments, using AI tools to customize patient treatments. 3. While there is currently a strong focus on AI models, more attention should also be given to the interaction design between AI and humans to ensure effective collaboration. 4. Rudbeck was a professor who worked across many fields like anatomy, botany, and linguistics. In the same way, AI connects technology, medicine, and data science, showing how important working across disciplines is to create new innovations.

Already looking forward to participating next week the Nordic Conference on Digital Health and Wireless Solutions organized by the Digital Health (DigiHealth) and 6G Enabled Sustainable Solutions (6GESS) research programs of the University of Oulu. DigiHealth and 6GESS combine multidisciplinary research activities in medical fields and health sciences with the latest developments in information technology, wireless communication, health economics and energy research. Agreed! The statistics from the UK referred to here are reflected across many (most?) parts of the world, and the discrepancy between the supply of radiologists and the demands for their services will only intensify for at least the next few years unless major interventions are implemented. What intervention is needed? Well reducing demand for diagnostic scans, bloated protocols and over-scanning is possible, but also challenges many people's view of what constitutes "good practice" (hard to argue against the "scan them just in case..." etc). And increasing the workforce supply requires major political interventions and has a long lead time. Yes, AI can help somewhat, but the levels of performance, user trust, adaptation and widespread adoption required are massive challenges that are unlikely to be overcome before the situation is substantially worse. Many (people, companies, organisations) are really trying hard to find solutions. But IMHO a unified multi-pronged approach is needed, driven and coordinated by national and international bodies, to discuss the pragmatic use of diagnostic scanning, consider options such as reporting radiographers, increase the supply of radiologists in training, how AI and other tech can be best leveraged and universally deployed, etc, etc. The list of possible solutions is long but there needs to be focus to choose, coordinate and then drive the implementation of the best options. Agree? Or should crowd-sourcing find the best solutions via independent small-scale iterative testing and evolutionary development? #radiologyneedsahero

Yesterday, I was part of a hard, but important, argument live on Danish radio. Why? I was invited to P1 Orientering because Danish professor Jens Meldgaard Bruun had recently told the media that we should shut down online weight management clinics. Professor Bruun simply argues that you cannot treat a patient properly online. To us, his comment reflects a lack of knowledge in the medical community about all the important non-medical aspects of obesity. Obesity is first and foremost a psychosocial disorder, where physical pathology comes second. We need to understand the individual’s relationship with eating, their body, thoughts, emotions, and environment so that we can apply the right therapy to address the root causes of obesity. And the truth is that all of the above is much better obtained in a continuous care setting, with frequent weekly communication with a coach or therapist, where trust is built rapidly and information is shared instantly—something that traditional brick-and-mortar clinics cannot efficiently facilitate. The elephant in the room is that the quality of obesity care, at both traditional providers and online pill mills, is horrible. The best care would be provided if we collaborated across traditional clinics and modern, highly accessible behavioural health providers like Embla. As proper care is lacking, I find it interesting how, in societies like Denmark, we are spending so much time discussing how to limit access to care. I think it reflects a deep bias against people with obesity—a core belief that having a large body is your own fault and that you do not deserve proper help, proper care. We need to combat this stigma and increase access to proper care, meaning psychosocial and medical intervention in a continuous, sustainable, and holistic manner.
